On January 25, 1978, a storm that initially began as rain quickly changed to heavy snow leading to frequent whiteouts and zero visibility on January 26. The Great Blizzard of 1978 was the most extensive and one of the most severe blizzards in Michigan history. Twenty people died from heart attacks or traffic accidents caused by the blizzard. Many people were hospitalized for exposure due to losing heat and power in their homes. An estimated 100,000 cars were abandoned on Michigan highways.
